KITCHENER’S ROB COWAN TAKES LEAD HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND
AT CANADIAN CLUB CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONSHIP

- Third new leader in as many days -

Baddeck, N.S. (RCGA) – The race is on for the Canadian Club Champions Championship at Bell Bay Golf Club as two-time runner up Rob Cowan of Kitchener, Ont., holds a slim one-stroke lead over Andrew Ross of Dundas, Ont., heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Cowan, representing Westmount Golf & Country Club, started the day three strokes off the lead in fifth position, carding a 71 to jump into the lead at two-over par with a three-day tally of 72-75-71—218. Ten players are within six strokes of Cowan’s lead, including Ross who is representing Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

“Today’s round wasn’t flashy but I hit my two-iron all day long and that kept me on the fairway,” said the 41 year-old Cowan. “Some of those guys were hitting the ball 40 yards farther all day long. I just kept to my game and right now it looks like it paid off.”

Cowan, who is the son of Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Gary Cowan, will be looking for his first Canadian Club Champions title after finishing second in both 2000 and 2002. He will be looking for a ‘do-over’ of his final round in 2000 where he lost in a playoff on the same Bell Bay course to Victoria’s Craig Doell.

“I’ve got some good memories of this tournament from the past and some heartbreak, but mostly a lot of good memories,” said Cowan. “I was a different golfer back then and I know I’ve learned some things.”

Last year’s runner-up Terry O’Brian of Tangle Creek Golf Club in Barrie, Ont., and Leon Carter of Dundee Resort Golf & Country Club in River Bourgeois, N.S. are both two-strokes behind in third place at 220 while yesterday’s leader Phil Patterson of Prescott Golf Club in Prescott, Ont. is in fifth place at 221.

Local Baddeck native Peter Campbell of the host Bell Bay Golf Club shot a third-round 76 and is 5 shots back of the leader.

Jason Monteleone of Kelowna Golf & Country Club in Kelowna, B.C., fired an astonishing five under-par, 67 carding the low score of the day and has the best score recorded during this year’s championship thus far. Prior to Monteleone’s low round, Michel Landry of Tracadie, N.B., held the low mark, shooting 70 during the first round. Landry, who was the opening-round leader, is representing Club de Golf Pokemouche in Caraquet, N.B.

A powerful wind from the southwest buffeted Bell Bay Golf Club with gusts picking up towards the end of the day and reaching up to 48km/h. Several players noted the wind as a factor affecting their scores today.

Following Thursday’s round, the field was cut to the low 70 scores and ties with 72 golfers advancing to Friday’s final round at Bell Bay.

This week’s champion is playing for a lot more then just bragging rights. As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions, the Canadian Club Champion could also earn the right to compete at this year’s Canadian Open played September 4-10 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. The Canadian Club Champion automatically earns an exemption into the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship where two exemptions into the Canadian Open are available to the amateur champion and runner-up. Mississaugua Golf & Country Club will host the Canadian Men’s Amateur this year from August 11-18.

Play wraps up tomorrow at Bell Bay Golf Club with the final round beginning at 8:00 a.m. (ADT).

To qualify for entry into the Canadian Club Champions Championship, a player must have won either his club’s stroke or match play championship. The championship is conducted at stroke play over 72 holes and after 54 holes the field is cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties.
