PHIL PATTERSON TAKES LEAD HEADING INTO THIRD ROUND AT CANADIAN CLUB CHAMPION CHAMPIONSHIP

- Crowded leaderboard sees nine competitors within seven-shots of the lead -

Baddeck, N.S. (RCGA) – Phil Patterson of Prescott, Ont. shot a second-round one-under par 71 at Bell Bay Golf Club to take a two-stroke lead heading into the third round of the 2006 Canadian Club Champions Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association.

Patterson, representing the Prescott Golf Club, was a model of consistency duplicating his opening round 71 for a two-day score of 142. He was so steady that he matched his opening front and back nine totals and tallied four birdies each day.

Patterson, who is playing in his fifth Canadian Club Champion Championship, was surprised by his lead.

“I’ve never started well at this tournament and had to play catch-up in the past. This is all new for me,” said the 41 year-old Patterson. “This course is set-up for my style of play and I haven’t been in a lot of trouble which has been the big difference.”

Patterson’s name may be familiar to hockey fans in the Ottawa area. Patterson was part of the 1984 Ottawa 67’s who were champions of the Memorial Cup and was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawk’s in the ninth round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft.

Andrew Ross of Dundas, Ont., representing Hamilton Golf & Country Club, is even for the championship and sits two-strokes back of Patterson at 71-73--144. Leon Carter of Dundee Resort Golf & Country Club in River Bourgeois, N.S. and last year’s runner up Terry O’Brien of Tangle Creek Golf Club in Barrie, Ont. are both four strokes off the lead at 146.

Yesterday’s leader Michel Landry of Tracadie, N.B., competing on behalf of Club de Golf Pokemouche in Caraquet, N.B., struggled and fell from the lead into a tie for 9th position. Landry carded a 79 for a two-day score of 149. Landry, Patterson and Ross all cited wind as a factor in today’s action.

“Wind made the course a lot tougher than yesterday,” said the 22 year-old Landry. “I just had a tough round, but that [wind] made it challenging. I couldn’t get my rhythm going today.”

Winds were blustery at 23km/h with gusts reaching a high of 35km/h.

Defending champion, Victor Ciesielski of Galt Country Club in Cambridge, Ont., fired a one-under par 71 to share the daily low round with Patterson and Marc-Étienne Bussières of Club de Golf Rivermead in Gatineau, QC. Ciesielski, 21, has a two-day total of 80-71--151. Last year Ciesielski overcame a 13-stroke deficit after the opening round - this year he opened up the championship 10 strokes behind the leader.

Bell Bay Golf Club’s Peter Campbell of Baddeck, N.S. carded a four-over par 76 to finish with a two-day total of 71-76—147. Campbell, who is the son of Sandy, a co-owner of Bell Bay Golf Club, was one stroke off the lead yesterday.

This week’s champion is playing for a lot more then just bragging rights. As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions, the Canadian Club Champion could also earn the right to compete at this year’s Canadian Open played September 4-10 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. The Canadian Club Champion automatically earns an exemption into the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship where two exemptions into the Canadian Open are available to the amateur champion and runner-up. Mississaugua Golf & Country Club will host the Canadian Men’s Amateur this year from August 11-18.

Play continues tomorrow at Bell Bay Golf Club with the third round beginning at 8:00 a.m. (EST).

CHIP SHOTS
LENGENDARY CONNECTION: Westmount Golf & Country Club’s Rob Cowan of Waterloo, Ont. is competing this week in Baddeck. Cowan was runner-up at the 2000 Canadian Club Champion Championship and is the son of Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Gary Cowan. His two day total is 72-75--147

CROSSING THE BOARDER: This year’s Canadian Club Champions Championship oddly enough features a lone American competitor - Ralph Michaud of Presque Isle, Maine, USA. Michaud took home his club title at Aroostook Valley Country Club which has the unique distinction of being a club with the pro-shop and parking lot in the United States while the course and clubhouse reside on Canadian soil.
