MICHEL LANDRY TOPS CROWDED LEADERBOARD AT CANADIAN CLUB CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONSHIP

- 28 players within six shots of the lead -

Baddeck, N.S. (RCGA) – Michel Landry of Moncton, N.B. leads a crowded leaderboard following play of the first round at the 2006 Canadian Club Champions Championship hosted by Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck, N.S.

Landry, who is the 2006 Club Champion from Club de Golf Pokemouche in Caraquet, N.B., fired an opening round 70 for a slim lead.

“This course is playing a lot more difficult then it was for the Canadian Men’s Amateur last year,” said Landry. “I had an ok round posting four bogeys early. I ended up making them up in the end so I’m ok with that round.”

Three sit one-shot back of Landry including Phil Patterson of Prescott Golf Club in Prescott, Ont., Andrew Ross of Dundas, Ont., representing Hamilton Golf & Country Club and Peter Campbell of host club Bell Bay Golf Club. In all 28 players are within six shots of the lead -- well within striking distance of Landry.

Campbell, the son of a Bell Bay Golf Club’s co-owner, credited his one-under par performance to his local course knowledge.

“It’s big,” said the 23 year-old Campbell. “It’s not so much an advantage off the tee, but around the green it really helped. A couple guys struggled with that today and I didn’t seem to have the same trouble; having that extra bit of information helps.”

Defending champion, Victor Ciesielski of Galt Country Club in Cambridge, Ont., carded a disappointing 80, 10-shots off the lead. Last year, Ciesielski found himself in a similar position when he overcame a 13-stroke deficit after the opening round to capture the title.

“It doesn’t really mean much,” said Ciesielski. “I learned last year that a 13 shot lead can disappear pretty quickly. A few good holes back-to-back will put you right back in it…that’s golf.”

This week’s champion is playing for a lot more then just bragging rights. As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions, the Canadian Club Champion could also earn the right to compete at this year’s Canadian Open played September 4-10 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. The Canadian Club Champion automatically earns an exemption into the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship where two exemptions into the Canadian Open are available to the champion and runner-up. Mississaugua Golf & Country Club will host the Canadian Men’s Amateur this year from August 11-18.

Monday’s practice round was partially cancelled after a rain storm moved into the Baddeck area saturating the course. Although the weather on Tuesday was mainly sunny with some cloudy periods, damp conditions prevailed forcing competitors to slog through their round.

Play continues tomorrow at Bell Bay Golf Club with the second round beginning at 7:30 a.m. (EST).

CHIP SHOTS

FAMILY TIES - Three generations of the MacDonald family from Sydney, N.S. are making the Canadian Club Champion Championship a family affair. Richie MacDonald representing Breton Players Golf Club is competing this week in Baddeck, while his father and son are also involved. Richie’s father Ken is acting as an RCGA starting and scoring official this week while his 9 year-old son Camden was part of the opening ceremonies on Monday evening.

AGE DIFFERENCE – 51 is the difference between the youngest and oldest competitor playing in this week’s championship. Gerald Dallas of Club de Golf Joliette in Rawden, QC represents the oldest competitor at 68 years while Brian Affleck of Glen Lovat Golf Club in Sutherlands River, NS is the youngest at 17 years-old.

HISTORY - Bell Bay Golf Club last hosted the Canadian Club Champions championship in 2000 when RCGA National Amateur Team member Craig Doell of Victoria, B.C. won his second of three titles. Last season the Bell Bay Golf Club was home to the 2005 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and hosted CN Future Links Atlantic events in 2000 and 2001.

To qualify for entry into the Canadian Club Champions Championship, a player must have won either his club’s stroke or match play championship. The championship is conducted at stroke play over 72 holes and after 54 holes the field is cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties.
