2005
Canadian Amateur a Huge Success
In the end, it all went like clockwork. The weather was perfect, the course
challenging, the play inspiring. On
Friday, August 19, Richard Scott of Kingville, Ont. defeated Jay Snyder of
Vancouver 10&8 at Baddeck’s Bell Bay Golf Club to win the 2005 Canadian
Men’s Amateur Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association
(RCGA).

Scott,
who entered match play as the 52nd seed, knocked off five higher-seeded
opponents en-route to the finals. The 21-year old saved his best golf
for the final with one of the most convincing wins in the 101-year
history of the Canadian Men’s Amateur. With the victory, Scott,
who also won the 2003 Amateur Championship, becomes the 12th multiple
winner of the Earl Grey Cup.

A
six-under-parr 66 was clearly the score to beat. That’s
what it took for Andrew Parr of London, Ontario to take stroke-play
medalist honours and win the top seed for the match play portion
of the Amateur, and the same, scorching score by James Love led
Alberta to win the event’s Willingdon Cup provincial team
title. Alberta's team total of 429 was six better than Ontario.
The Alberta foursome was made up of Love, Calgary (71-66); Ryan
Swelin, Sundre (74-74), Ryan Lecuyer, Edmonton (75-69) and Ryan
Vallely, Medicine Hat (77-75). It was Alberta's 12th Willingdon
Cup and first since 2002. |
