Toronto, June 14, 2001: Joe Sakic, captain of the Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche, was announced today as the fourth player for the Wayne Gretzky & Friends Invitational, being held at Bell Bay Golf Club in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia on July 1 & 2, 2001. Sakic will team up with Wayne Gretzky and Brett Hull in a best-ball competition against Canada’s PGA sensation Mike Weir. “Wayne has told me how great the event and the fans were last year, so I was thrilled to receive the invitation to be part of his team this year,” said Sakic. “I’m looking forward to visiting Cape Breton and seeing Mike Weir’s game up close.” The two-day event will kick off on Sunday July 1st with Super Sunday, a family-oriented day featuring a Celebrity Shoot-out, a Long-Drive Exhibition and an eighteen-hole Celebrity-Am. Tournament play will be conducted over 18 holes on Monday July 2nd as Gretzky, Hull, Sakic and Weir take to the course in front of what is expected to be a sold-out crowd.
