Bell Bay Welcomes the RCGA "Club Champions"
The Canadian Club Champions Championship is coming to Cape Breton.
From June 19 to 23, Bell Bay is hosting 156 (a record field) club champions from across Canada. The RCGA established the tournament in 1986 to give club champions a chance to compete each other in a national event. To qualify, a player must have won either his club廣 stroke play or match play title.
The format is 72 holes stroke play beginning Tuesday, June 20 (Monday is practice day). Thursday is cut day with the 70 low golfers and ties making it to Friday廣 championship round. The RCGA will award the top three players and crown the 2000 Club Champions Champion.
It幢l be a busy week at Bell Bay starting at 6:00 Monday evening with the formal Flag Raising Ceremony. The "Official Championship Party" is piped in and introduced to the players and other guests. There廣 a player廣 reception and dinner on Wednesday evening. And there廣 the Award廣 Ceremony on Friday.
There are two Cape Breton golfers - David LeBlanc is representing Lingan and Trevor Chow is the host club廣 champion. In all, there are 33 golfers competing from clubs in Atlantic Canada.
There will be a staffed media room open each day. We幢l have phone, fax, and internet service available. As well, a special golf cart with driver can ferry photographers and television shooters to the action.

LOCAL CHAMPION EYES NATIONAL CROWN
--Canadian Club Champions Championship set to unfold--
Oakville, Ont. -- None of the 156 golfers in the Canadian Club Champions Championship in Baddeck, N.S. will be as familiar with the course at the Bell Bay Golf Club as Trevor Chow. In fact, few members at Bell Bay know the course better than he does.
Chow, 23, will compete against club champions from all 10 provinces in the 15-year-old championship, running from June 19 to 23. He has been the only club champion Bell Bay has known in its short three-year history. The three-time winner has held the course record on two occasions. He works in the pro shop at the club and plays the course daily.
"You can put me almost anywhere out there and I'll have a good idea what club to hit in," says Chow. Local knowledge aside, the recent Dalhousie University graduate recognizes there are two sides to a home-course advantage. "Obviously, you put more pressure on yourself but I think I can handle it."
Even if he can handle the hometown pressure, he'll still have to deal with an impressive field, which includes 1997 Canadian Club Champions champion Craig Doell of Victoria and a number of other notable players, including Garth Collings of Winnipeg, Dan Partland of Bolton, Ont. and Merv Dusyk of Red Deer, Alta.-all top-10 finishers at last year's championship in Prince Albert, Sask.
Chow was in Prince Albert as well last year and finished tied for 32nd in the field.
"This tournament has the best players from clubs all across Canada," said Chow, acknowledging the strong field. "I think you're going to see some pretty good golf during the week."
Bell Bay's 6,850-yard par-72 championship course has been groomed to challenge club champions from all 10 provinces. "They're growing up the rough," Chow says. "It's really long. They've really put a premium on hitting the fairways."
Bell Bay, named the best new course in Canada by Golf Digest magazine in 1998, is relatively open on the front nine, and may forgive a few mistakes early on. However, on the back nine, the fairways tighten and water comes into play. The wind, which generally picks up in the afternoon, can also be a factor heading back to the clubhouse, providing an additional challenge for those in the afternoon groups.
The 2000 championship will be conducted at stroke play over 72 holes. The field is open to a maximum of 156 players. After 54 holes, the field will be cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties.
The competition is open to current designated club champions from member clubs of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, who are male amateur golfers. Only one entry per member club is accepted.
The Royal Canadian Golf Association, the governing body of men's amateur golf in Canada, determines national policies and standards relating to the game on behalf of its more than 282,000 members. Information about all RCGA events and programs can be found at www.rcga.org on the Internet.

COWAN HOPES TO CLAIM FIRST NATIONAL TITLE
Three tied for top spot after first round
Baddeck, N.S.- -- Robert Cowan of Kitchener, Ont. hopes to make winning national championships a family tradition, and he is one step closer to achieving that goal after the first round of the Canadian Club Champions Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association at Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck, N.S.
The son of 1961 Canadian Amateur champion and RCGA Male Amateur of the Century Gary Cowan is in a three-way tie for the lead after 18 holes. Cowan, representing Westmount Golf and Country Club, Bob Brown of Fredericton Golf and Curling Club in Fredericton and Jeremy Julie of Sawmill Golf Club in Fenwick, Ont. all shot 2-under-par 70 this morning. They sit one shot ahead of Ray Henry of Brentwood Bay, B.C. and Pierre-Étienne Langevin of Montchatel, Que.
"Fundamentally, I played it smart-I used my 1-iron eight times off the tee," said Cowan of his opening round. The 6,835-yard par-72 Bell Bay course has been groomed to challenge the 156 club champions in the field with deep rough and narrow fairways. Missing fairways will prove costly to competitors, according to Cowan. "Even if you can find your ball, you can't hit it," he said.
Julie, who plays out of the Sawmill Golf Club, was the Canadian Juvenile champion in 1989 and was the Ontario Junior champion in 1991. He spent four years on the University of Virginia golf team and was named a Golf Coaches' Association of America All-American Scholar in 1997.
Brown, based out of Fredericton Golf and Curling Club, was once a member of New Brunswick's Willingdon Cup team in the early 1990s. He has spent several years battling well-known tournament players Mel Murray and Anthony MacKinnon for his club's championship. Coincidentally, MacKinnon-who moved to Calgary last year, won his club championship there and then moved back to Fredericton-is also playing in this championship, allowing the club-mates to go head-to-head at the national level.
The 2000 championship is being conducted at stroke play over 72 holes. After 54 holes, the field will be cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties. The competition is open to current designated club champions from member clubs of the RCGA, who are male amateur golfers. Only one entry per member club is accepted.

RENNIE, COWAN SHARE LEAD HEADING INTO FINAL
ROUNDAT CANADIAN CLUB CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONSHIP
Third-round 69 moves Edmontonian from 10th to first
Baddeck, N.S. -- Grant Rennie of Edmonton shot a 3-under-par 69 today and moved from 10th spot into a tie for the lead after three rounds at the Canadian Club Champions Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association at Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck, N.S.
Rennie, who plays out of the Derrick Golf and Winter Club, has carded a three-round total of 75-74-69-218, matching the 70-75-73-218 total recorded by Rob Cowan of Waterloo, Ont. The 25-year-old Edmontonian was two-shots better than anyone else in the 156-man field Thursday, despite gusty winds and periods of drizzle during his round.
"It was one of those 'I can't remember' rounds," said Rennie, who sank four birdies and a single bogey in the day's 18 holes. "I've never had a tournament like this before-tomorrow is 'big' for me."
Cowan, the son of 1961 Canadian Amateur champion and RCGA Male Amateur of the Century Gary Cowan, has been consistent through the past three days, missing only a handful of greens over 54 holes of play.
"I'm a little surprised to be where I am on the leaderboard," he said. "I've been in tournaments like this before, sitting in 17th or 18th spot going into the final round. My game has been rock solid here. I'm very pleased."
The club champion from Waterloo's Westmount Golf and Country Club has relied heavily on his 1-iron so far in this tournament, leaving the driver in his bag as he navigated the narrow fairways of the 6,835-yard par-72 Bell Bay course. However, his strategy hit a bit of a snag today when that 1-iron was left behind on the 13th tee. He and his wife Nancy, who caddies for him, didn't realize the club was missing until they arrived at the 15th tee. After Nancy retrieved it, Cowan and his prized club went on to finish with his 73, one of only two recorded during the day.
Cowan and Rennie hold a four-stroke lead over second-round leader Bob Brown of Fredericton, 1997 champion Craig Doell of Victoria and 1989 Canadian Juvenile champion Jeremy Julie of Fenwick, Ont.
The field at the 2000 Canadian Club Champions Championship has now been cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties, leaving 71 players to finish Friday's final round. The Club Champions Championship is open to current designated club champions from member clubs of the RCGA, who are male amateur golfers. Only one entry per member club is accepted.
The Royal Canadian Golf Association, the governing body of men's amateur golf in Canada, determines national policies and standards relating to the game on behalf of its more than 294,000 members. Information about all RCGA events and programs can be found at www.rcga.org on the Internet.

RCGA NEWS RELEASE-- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 23/06/2000
PLAYOFF VICTORY NETS DOELL HIS SECOND
NATIONAL TITLE
-Victoria golfer repeats 1997 playoff magic at Bell Bay-
Baddeck, N.S. -- Craig Doell of Victoria claimed his second Canadian Club Champions Championship today after a one-hole playoff with Rob Cowan of Waterloo, Ont. at Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck, N.S.
Doell, who won a three-man playoff in 1997 to claim his first national champion of champions title, started the day four-strokes behind third-round leaders Cowan and Grant Rennie of Edmonton. The club champion from Victoria Golf Club was three strokes behind Cowan after 14 holes, but birdied the 15th and 17th. Cowan bogied No. 17, leading to the playoff, and then hit his 1-iron into the trees off the playoff tee. Doell parred the 405-yard par-4 10th hole to win his second Royal Canadian Golf Association national championship.
"The first time is always unique and special," said Doell, reminiscing about his 1997 victory at Hylands Golf Club in Ottawa, "but this is just as sweet. I thought I'd need 4 under [par] to do it. I'm just glad I had a good final round."
Doell finished the tournament with a 72-73-77-70-292 final score. Cowan, who had a share of the lead in the first and third rounds, recorded a four-day total of 70-75-73-70-292.
"I've played some of my best golf here," said Cowan, the club champion from Westmount Golf and Country Club, reflecting on the two bogies that cost him his first national title. "I just tried to overpower it, and I shouldn't have."
Rennie shot a 79 Friday, finishing with a 75-74-69-79-297 total. Jeremy Julie of Fenwick, Ont., who shared the lead with Cowan in the first round, tied Rennie with a 70-76-76-75-297 final score.
The field at the 2000 Canadian Club Champions Championship started out with 156 players from Canada's 10 provinces and was cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties, leaving 71 players to finish Friday's final round.
